Actually, the last line in the novel Gone With The Wind is, "Frankly, I don't give a damn." So, it's the addition of the "my dear" that softens the line a bit in the film.

There's never been any doubt in my mind that the big brou-ha-ha over "damn" was to distract from other controversial subject content (detailed discussions of pregnancy, childbirth and miscarriage; rape, in marriage no less) which in 1939 one would have expected all hell to break out over. Relevant to that, the "G" rating receieved on all three MPAA code-era theatrical re-releases (c. 1974, 1989 [50th anniversary] & 1999) was indefensible.

Speaking of those, on both of the latter two, the owners (Turner Entertainment and Time-Warner, respectively) made the exact same promotional announcements: They claimed to have gone back to the original three-strip Technicolor negatives and only people who had seen GWTW on its first release had seen it as it would appear this time. I repeat, this was said on the ocassions of both the 1989 and 1999 theatrical reissues! What do you make of that, Brian?

And I'd guess that first exception for "damn" in the revised code had something to do with a famous David Farragut phrase about torpedoes.

I would have immediately given that camel a big hug, and whatever his favorite food/drink is at the earliest opportunity. Not to mention a nice gift for his trainer. (If I were a rich celebrity. :) )
