It’s a great question, Mary, as to why exactly they changed it from Wally to Waldo in America. I honestly don’t know.

These laws regarding scenes with kids sound absolutely ridiculous. Is there any teenager anywhere who hasn’t seen a picture of a dick? I would expect that a firm majority have drawn a dick at least once or twice.

Is it true that Waldo is named Wally in Britain? What is the point of a name change like that? I’ve noticed in ‘Last Of The Summer Wine’ that ‘Wally’ seems to be an insult of some sort in England, but I don’t know what precisely it means.

I tend to think that’s the most likely scenario, as well, Sean, that he just really liked the sound of “Directing at 21″ as opposed to the alternate “lied about his age to get out of a contract” story.

And yeah, it’s right at the changeover.

I couldn’t get it to work, but it’s a flash right before the cut to the next shot, right?

BTW, Spielberg notoriously, oh-let’s-be-nice-and-say- “exaggerates”, a lot about his early stories. He has invented an entire story about faking his way into an office which people still quote to this day, and is by all accounts absolutely false.

It would be interesting if he were lying about his age for a specific reason comprable to Bob Kane, but I think he just wanted to be seen as a wunderkind and the “21″ thing was important to him because of is own personal mythology.

Because it was a practical joke in the middle of a horrific scene - people felt it was inappropriate. I think it might even have been cut from the DVD release, as a result.
