Monk didn't revive the series named after the character trend, it had been going on for years with other versions of the detective genre from the 80s into the nineties and into the 2000s before Monk even started- to name a few you have Walker, Texas Ranger and Matlock and Nash Bridges and Crossing Jordan etc. It has always been around since the infancy of TV and with new ones coming in each year alongside existing shows it isn't going to end even if people don't like the shows that are on that are named after their character.

I have been searching for episodes of a 1960s TV series that may have fallen into the public domain called THE MAN WHO NEVER WAS, about a spy who is forced to take over a millionaire's identity when the millionaire is killed while going over the Berlin Wall, and apparently the spy's agency wants to hide the fact that he has died for some reason unknown to me (perhaps his company was making munitions that were vital to American Security). Both characters were played by the actor Robert Lansing. Could you please tell me where I could find some episodes of this remarkable series?

SPACE: 1999 was actually intended to be the second season of U.F.O., an earlier series, so history repeated there as well.

I felt sorry when TOMA finished. I'd like to see that wonderful series again and again and I hope to see TOMA on "DVD" (1 or more discs if necessary).

The last of the cycle was Baywatch, which starred David Hassellhoff as Detective Mitch Baywatch.

(At least according to Paul Shaffer on Letterman one night....)

Found the first one, gang.
In 1949, Sept 1st, Martin Kane premired on NBC. This would be the first, according to Total Television by Alex McNeil.
He starts listing shows from 1948 on.
And I'm curious about when the trend ended?
After Magnum, Spenser, McGyver?
Devilin?
It really never ended , just the detective series receeded.
