That Harry Nilsson legend is a good one, but I'd caution you from citing Secrest's Sondheim bio too often. There are a number of factual errors in that book, some quite glaring (she gets the plot of Merrily We Roll Along incorrect!) so us Sondheim fanatics take much of that book with a grain of salt. Of course this one is correct and is corroborated by other Sondheim interviews, but just thought I'd let you know!

Hi,
it's feasible , in jamaica the kingston scene mainly, records, presses, distributes to the sound systems within a day (producer lee "scratch" perry for instance with his black ark studio) .
Distribution would be an issue for the states and the sinatra 45 seeing the vastness of it !

I presume it was thanks to Sinatra having his own record label at the time, Gene.

I know it seems hard to believe, but you can check it out - the recording date and the release date of the single are within a day of each other in April of 1966.

The Sinatra fact doesn't sound quite right to me, I'm afraid...it just doesn't seem plausible that he could record a song in a day, and his label could press tens of thousands of copies overnight to ship to stores on the following day. Today, artists can and do release music digitally almost as soon as they make it in the studio, but back in the 60s there was a detailed process for making records, and it could be time-consuming.

For instance, take a look at "Ohio" by CSNY. Neil Young wrote it just days after the Kent State shootings, the group went into the studio immediately to record it, their record label rushed the mixing and pressings, and it still took several weeks to be released.

I'm trying to figure out what is "False Enough for a False" about the Harry Nilsson piece. It doesn't seem like it was recorded before '69, it seems like it was a Christmas present... what am I missing?
