Even though we know the backstory to why it's not the right music, it still works great in context of the film that Ratner picked up the wrong album.

Cut Spicoli's scenes? You Dick! (j/k)

"That Azoff was the manager of the Eagles I’m sure had absolutely no impact on what he felt made for a good soundtrack."

I just read an interview with Heckerling where she explains it in a little more detail; The Eagles had just broken up, and Azoff was the manager of them as a group *and* as individual artists, so he actually pushed for each solo Eagle to have a song on the soundtrack in addition to group songs. (I believe a compromise of some kind was reached.)

A similar deliberate mistake is in Almost Famous. Joni Mitchell's Blue album was not released in the 60s, when the scene of the young William Miller discovers his sisters records. But Crowe (and everyone else) loved that album and put it in anyway.

I've never understood why Spicoli was the one to become indelibly linked with the image of Fast Times in the public mind. His character and story are the least interesting part of the film. Hell, I wouldn't mind if they'd been cut altogether.
