…From my own experience with the local See-BS affiliate, I can confirm that the reasons Meg Foster was ousted from Cagney & Lacy was due to the show being perceived as “too dykish” or “too butch”. I’ve read some of the inter-affiliate memos between station heads over the matter, and the real surprise was that not all of them agreed with See-BS’ decision. The shocker was that the suits running the San Francisco affiliate *were* in favor of it, considering that at the time Frisco had become the “de-facto” homosexual capitol of the US, an irony that was not lost on the other affiliates.

It’s only a minor point, but I think Meg Foster was in 6 episodes of Cagney and Lacey, not 3.

Actually, because of the TV Guide article, I was confused about the definition of the word ‘dyke’ for a couple of years. I’d only seen it in print a couple of times before that, and I had no idea what it meant. I couldn’t find it in the crappy bowdlerised dictionary I had. So because of TV Guide’s article, I was under the assumption that it meant some sort of militant feminist or activist. It never occured to me that it meant lesbian.

There was some, Daniel. I know Howard Rosenberg took them to task in the LA Times.

But there wasn’t nearly as much of an uproar as there would be nowadays.
