I have to say, maybe I'm just being colored by nostalgia here, but I find the "Sam Francisco" joke (with Sykes' "I think I'll just call you George" line) is far funnier than the implied Jetson joke. Especially if the Jetson joke was going to be used through the whole movie, rather than just as an initial throwaway like the Sam joke eventually was.

I rewatched Alien Nation recently and it holds up as a pretty decent buddy cop movie. They've been showing it a LOT on Encore Action and I think it is because starting premise of the movie bears a lot of resemblance to the starting premise of District 9.

"A John Wayne anti-Communism film was dubbed in Europe and other places as an anti-drug film. "

"Get off your 'Horse' and drink your milk!"

Wasn't the original screenplay (or perhaps the book from which it was adapted) for Alien Nation named "Meet George Jetson"? (which happens to be a line from The Jetsons theme music).

The TV series continued with the theme, using as many punny and other-source-character names as they thought they could get away with. On could only imagine, if one progressed that universe into the modern day, the trouble that they would hae had keeping things straight on Google and Wikipedia...

There's also a bit of irony in the John Wayne movie "reworking" in that (according to their own documents released after 1991) the KGB got itself involved (in the 60s & 70s) in drug smuggling to the west (mostly Europe) to try to undermine those nations, much as the CIA used drug deals to fund black ops against communist nations. Eventually, the KGB stopped such activities when they lost too many agents to the allure of the big, easy, money of the drug trade, and several parts of the post-communist Russian "mafia" can be traced back to such KGB agents gone rogue for the cash.</i>
