Having seen "Movin' Out" on Broadway with the original cast (as well as some of Tharp's other pieces), I think it's a mistake to use that as an example of Tharp's choreography being "mainstream" or dumbed down for a mass audience. Yes, Billy Joel is about as proletariat a pop musician as you can find in the United States, but that had nothing to do with Tharp's choreography. As you alluded to when discussing Merce Cunningham, modern dance choreographers have made it a point to show that the music is only a secondary consideration when it comes to their work. Using Joel's music was a great gimmick to get people who would otherwise not go to dance performances to come to the show. Tharp is still considered an innovator as a (post) modern choreographer, mainly for her lack of orthodoxy when it comes to mixing dance styles (modern, ballet, etc) into unified pieces.
