I hadn't heard that about Bryan Adams, though I do remember that one of the members of Loverboy refused to perform on the group's "Top Gun" track, "Heaven in Your Eyes," for pretty much the same anti-military reason attributed to Adams.

It's just as well Alice didn't get his version in...it's really kind of a weak song. Muscle of Love, in general, is pretty weak, which is particularly disappointing, coming as it does between Billion Dollar Babies and Welcome To My Nightmare.

'Top Gun' is one of the worst and most overrated films ever, just a horrible piece of Tony Scott fluff. And that music is so unbelievably bland and indicative of Reagan-era horridness... Bryan Adams, as full of awful fluff as he was, made a good move in not participating.

The scene in Top Gun where "Playing With The Boys" is played, by the way, is one of the most homoerotic scenes in the history of film.

"the searing pages of Reader's Digest!" Wow. First and last time that phrase was ever used.

That dripping black stain on the "Unchained" poster somehow seems very sinister to me.

And I just gained major respect for Bryan Adams!

I had first read of Alice Cooper doing a song for the movie "The Man With The Golden Gun" in Bob Greene's book about singing backup on Cooper's album and going on tour "Billion Dollar Babies". As it was told in the book, Cooper saw the previous Bond movie and saw the last credit declaring that "James Bond will return in Man With The Golden Gun" and thought it would be cool to write and perform a song that would be considered for the theme.

Boxcuttah:

Adams, being a Canadian liberal, was more inclined to think automatically that "military=evil", especially if set in the modern day (this was in the tail end of the military-bashing era from Vietnam, which was being turned around in the Reagan era by movies that were neither glorifying nor damning the military, just using them as a setting). Granted, by the early 90s, there were some gratuitously gung-ho movies (and even a few early really bad ones that had little realism in them - Megaforce & Delta Force, anyone?), but Top Gun was a love story, first, and propaganda piece MAYBE 5th or 6th (I'd put selling the music higher in priority than its military stance - it's one of the most solidly constructed albums in history for both hitmaking and replayability - and after that, was looked on as a vehicle to promote the careers of Tom, Val and the female lead).

Top Gun, with a few changes, could have worked as a WWII movie (instead of being about the training school, being about test pilots) - in fact, it's an aircraft pilot version of a number of WWII movies about infantrymen. Heck, if you look at it that way, much of the meme of Top Gun is also found in the anime "Macross Plus". For the meme to work, there has to be a military involved, and a foe - but they are NOT the focus of the meme, the characters are.

And, frankly, I just can't see how Adams or Toto could have done that song at all. It's totally the wrong style, and for the life of me I can't figure out how one could alter the performers AND the song enough for it to work for them.
