"Also, it should be pointed out that everyone DID know who killed the chauffeur in the book"

Wait, what? I wish people wouldn't say things like this without further explanation, because I'm pretty sure it isn't true.

It is cool that William Faulkner was one of the writers of 'The Big Sleep', but don't ignore Leigh Brackett. She was a great writer, too.

John- I assume he meant what he said. Calling him "presenter" would imply he hosted a game show, and there's no record of that anywhere. Presumably he meant that he (or more likely, his management), got him a slot as a contestant or guest (though I find no mention of it in the usual sourcves. Is it possible Brian's confusing him with Paul Newman, who was a contestant on I've Got a Secret?).

This has continued, by the way, to the present day. People often get a laugh at seeing the "regular people" on old episodes of the Dating Game who turned out to be future stars. Today, there are fewer actors on game shows (though the more animated the show, the more likely it casts performers), but reality shows have not primarily cast with submissions from the general public for years.

Pretty good explanations this week.

I found some typos, though:
"Robert Redford, for instance, was a presented on a game show."
He was a "presented"? I think should be "presenter".

"Dig three balloons out of a vat of whopped cream..."
What's whopped cream? ;)

See, I disagree. The heart of "The Big Sleep" legend is "They were confused", whereas the real-life situation seems to have been "They couldn't decide". Thus, "false" seems right to me.

Well, I think you're oversimplifying things on 'The Big Sleep' in order to make it false. It's basically true. In "Who The Devil Made It", Bogdanovich asks Hawks "Is it true that none of you could figure out who killed a certain character in the picture?" Hawks responds "Oh, that's true, yes. We were arguing about who killed so-and-so and we couldn't come to any decision, so we wired Raymond Chandler. He wired back a name and we wired him saying, 'But it couldn't have been him-- he was at the beach at the time."

I swear that I've seen video of Hawks saying that he wired Faulkner first, who had already returned to Mississippi, then wired Chandler, neither of whom had a good answer.

There are a couple of complicating factors here. Both Faulkner and Chandler really meant that they didn't care. Chandler has his famous line about how not caring about what Hollywood did to his books because the original was still on his shelf, and Faulkner had already washed his hands of the project.

Also, it should be pointed out that everyone DID know who killed the chauffeur in the book, but that person couldn't do it in the movie because they didn't get their just deserts at the end and that would violate the Hays code. Chandler wasn't saying he didn't know about the book, he was saying he didn't know about the movie.

And I certainly agree that you should just call this a twice-weekly column and use the actual date. All the backdating gives the column an unnecessary patina of flopsweat for no good reason. It's a great site and it's no shame to post twice a week. (Although I'm not one to talk. I force myself to post everyday over at my blog and it's sending me to an early grave)
