Click <a href=\"http:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/entertainment\/2009\/04\/19\/tv-legends-revealed-history\/\">here<\/a> to view an archive of the TV urban legends featured so far.<\/p>\n<p><u><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">TV URBAN LEGEND<\/span><\/u>: Aaron Spelling paid Luke Perry&#8217;s salary himself for the first two seasons of 90210.<\/p>\n<p>Beverly Hills 90210 was a big hit as soon as it debuted in October 1990, and it was practically a cultural zeitgeist of its own, leading in a wave of shows aimed at &#8220;Generation X&#8221; viewers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/entertainment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/beverly-hills-90210_l.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><iframe src=\"http:\/\/rcm.amazon.com\/e\/cm?t=legenrevea-20&#038;o=1&#038;p=8&#038;l=as1&#038;asins=B000H7JCG4&#038;ref=tf_til&#038;fc1=000000&#038;IS2=1&#038;lt1=_blank&#038;m=amazon&#038;lc1=0000FF&#038;bc1=000000&#038;bg1=FFFFFF&#038;f=ifr\" style=\"width:120px;height:240px;\" scrolling=\"no\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It was yet another hit for famed TV producer Aaron Spelling.<\/p>\n<p>One cast member missing in the first episode, though, was Luke Perry, whose portrayal of &#8220;bad boy&#8221; Dylan McKay soon became perhaps the most famous character on the show.<\/p>\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/entertainment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/luke-perry-20060423-124478.jpg\" alt=\"luke-perry-20060423-124478\" title=\"luke-perry-20060423-124478\" width=\"403\" height=\"500\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/entertainment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/luke-perry-20060423-124478.jpg 403w, https:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/entertainment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/luke-perry-20060423-124478-241x300.jpg 241w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 403px) 100vw, 403px\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Spelling was quite taken with the actor, who he thought had a lot of appeal, but the network was less enthused. <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>They approved Perry appearing in an episode (and perhaps a story arc, but that&#8217;s it). <\/p>\n<p>Once they saw the dailies for the first episode, they were unimpressed. Spelling told them that Perry was a hot commodity at the time and that if they did not lock him up to a deal right then, they would lose him. They told him, fine, we&#8217;ll lose him.<\/p>\n<p>Undeterred, Spelling took his case to the head of Fox, Barry Diller. Diller told him he couldn&#8217;t force his people to pay an actor that they didn&#8217;t like, but if Spelling wanted to pay for him, then that&#8217;d be okay.<\/p>\n<p>And amazingly enough, that&#8217;s exactly what Spelling did!<\/p>\n<p>He was so sure that Perry would be good for the show that he shelled out his own money to pay Perry&#8217;s salary for his first TWO years on the show!<\/p>\n<p>Now, don&#8217;t get me wrong &#8211; Aaron Spelling was not exactly a poor man. He could have paid the entire cast without too much of a pinch on his personal coffers, but still, it was a tremendous gesture by Spelling to put his own money on the line.<\/p>\n<p>Perry certainly paid off on the bet, as he became a major star for Fox and they began paying him starting in season three.<\/p>\n<p>The legend is&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><u><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">STATUS<\/span><\/u>: True<\/p>\n<p>Feel free (heck, I implore you!) to write in with your suggestions for future urban legends columns!
