Click <a href=\"http:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/entertainment\/2009\/04\/19\/music-legends-revealed-history\/\">here<\/a> to view an archive of the music urban legends featured so far.<\/p>\n<p><u><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">MUSIC URBAN LEGEND<\/span><\/u>: Carly Simon auctioned off the identity of who &#8220;You&#8217;re So Vain&#8221; was about for $50,000!<\/p>\n<p>One of the great mysteries of pop music is who is the &#8220;mystery man&#8221; behind Carly Simon&#8217;s 1972 smash hit, &#8220;You&#8217;re So Vain.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/entertainment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/carly_simon_grande4.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><iframe src=\"http:\/\/rcm.amazon.com\/e\/cm?t=legenrevea-20&#038;o=1&#038;p=8&#038;l=as1&#038;asins=B0012CUCDU&#038;fc1=000000&#038;IS2=1&#038;lt1=_blank&#038;m=amazon&#038;lc1=0000FF&#038;bc1=000000&#038;bg1=FFFFFF&#038;f=ifr\" style=\"width:120px;height:240px;\" scrolling=\"no\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The song rips apart a vain man and has the striking chorus, &#8220;You&#8217;re so vain, I bet you think this song is about you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Various suggested targets have been Simon&#8217;s ex-husband James Taylor, actor Warren Beatty and musician Mick Jagger (who sang back-up on the song).<\/p>\n<p>Beatty is the only one of those three who Simon has not said &#8220;no&#8221; to over the years (although, who knows if she was being genuine when she turned down the others)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/entertainment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/beatty.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In any event, in 2003, Simon offered up for a charity auction the secret behind the song.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nThe winning bidder was Dick Ebersol, longtime TV executive (and friend of Simon&#8217;s)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/entertainment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/dick_ebersol.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Ebersol paid $50,000 for the information!<\/p>\n<p>He had to sign a confidentiality agreement beforehand and finally, at midnight (after dining on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and vodka), Simon told him the information. <\/p>\n<p>I hope it was worth it, Dick!<\/p>\n<p>The legend is&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><u><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">STATUS<\/span><\/u>: True<\/p>\n<p>Feel free (heck, I implore you!) to write in with your suggestions for future urban legends columns!
