Click <a href=\"http:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/entertainment\/2009\/04\/19\/movie-legends-revealed-history\/\">here<\/a> to view an archive of the movie urban legends featured so far.<\/p>\n<p><u><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">MOVIE URBAN LEGEND<\/span><\/u>: Don Ameche&#8217;s name used to be slang for &#8220;telephone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Don Ameche was a popular film star in the late 1930s and early 1940s.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/entertainment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/don-ameche-2694.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s most known today, though, for his career resurgence late in his life, when he starred in the two Cocoon films&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/entertainment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/cocoon.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><iframe src=\"http:\/\/rcm-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/cm?t=legenrevea-20&#038;o=1&#038;p=8&#038;l=as1&#038;asins=B00020HAV0&#038;fc1=000000&#038;IS2=1&#038;lt1=_blank&#038;m=amazon&#038;lc1=0000FF&#038;bc1=000000&#038;bg1=FFFFFF&#038;f=ifr\" style=\"width:120px;height:240px;\" scrolling=\"no\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>and as one of the two villainous brothers in the Eddie Murphy hit, Trading Places&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/entertainment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/tradingplaces.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><iframe src=\"http:\/\/rcm-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/cm?t=legenrevea-20&#038;o=1&#038;p=8&#038;l=as1&#038;asins=B000O59A16&#038;fc1=000000&#038;IS2=1&#038;lt1=_blank&#038;m=amazon&#038;lc1=0000FF&#038;bc1=000000&#038;bg1=FFFFFF&#038;f=ifr\" style=\"width:120px;height:240px;\" scrolling=\"no\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ameche died in 1993, leaving behind a legacy of many fine acting performances (this is not even mentioning his success on the radio, as well).<\/p>\n<p>However, one thing folks probably DON&#8217;T remember about Ameche was that it was, for a time, a slang term!<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nYou see, in 1938, Ameche starred in a film which told the story of the life of Alexander Graham Bell that was titled, appropriately enough, The Story of Alexander Graham Bell (Henry Fonda played his assistant, the &#8220;Watson&#8221; part of &#8220;Watson, come here, I need you&#8221; fame).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/entertainment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/3900044_lg_2_henry-fonda-don-ameche.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><iframe src=\"http:\/\/rcm-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/cm?t=legenrevea-20&#038;o=1&#038;p=8&#038;l=as1&#038;asins=B000NDDTRA&#038;fc1=000000&#038;IS2=1&#038;lt1=_blank&#038;m=amazon&#038;lc1=0000FF&#038;bc1=000000&#038;bg1=FFFFFF&#038;f=ifr\" style=\"width:120px;height:240px;\" scrolling=\"no\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The telephone was certainly not a new invention by 1938, but it was also not as prevalent as it soon became, so a major motion picture about the phone was quite notable in people&#8217;s minds, so Ameche&#8217;s last name soon became synonymous with the telephone, to the point where it became a slang term FOR telephone during the late 30s and most of the 40s.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, though, it, like Ameche in general, has faded from the popular consciousness.<\/p>\n<p>The legend is&#8230; <\/p>\n<p><u><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">STATUS<\/span><\/u>: True<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0415212596?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=legenrevea-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=0415212596\">The Concise New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=legenrevea-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=0415212596\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/> for the confirmation that this was, indeed, a slang term used during the 1940s.<\/p>\n<p>Feel free (heck, I implore you!) to write in with your suggestions for future installments!
