Click <a href=\"http:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/entertainment\/2009\/04\/19\/tv-legends-revealed-history\/\">here<\/a> to view an archive of the TV urban legends featured so far.<\/p>\n<p><u><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">TV URBAN LEGEND<\/span><\/u>: A plot line on Glee about a character not being considered for a &#8220;girl&#8221; song actually happened to one of the cast members in real life.<\/p>\n<p>When it debuted, Glee was one of the most popular new series that television season, following the exploits of a high school glee club and their teacher&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/entertainment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/glee.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><iframe style=\"width:120px;height:240px;\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&#038;OneJS=1&#038;Operation=GetAdHtml&#038;MarketPlace=US&#038;source=ac&#038;ref=qf_sp_asin_til&#038;ad_type=product_link&#038;tracking_id=legenrevea-20&#038;marketplace=amazon&#038;region=US&#038;placement=B00T6KINS6&#038;asins=B00T6KINS6&#038;linkId=IMG7JU24RVALPPLD&#038;show_border=true&#038;link_opens_in_new_window=true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>One of the main cast members on the series (he was there the whole six season run of the show) was a teen named Kurt, played by Chris Colfer&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/entertainment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/kurt.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Kurt&#8217;s coming out to his father was one of the most touching moments in the first season of the show. <\/p>\n<p>Early in the show&#8217;s run, Glee aired an episode about Kurt being irritated at not being considered to perform the song &#8220;Defying Gravity&#8221; from the 2003 Broadway musical, Wicked.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/entertainment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/wicked1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><iframe style=\"width:120px;height:240px;\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&#038;OneJS=1&#038;Operation=GetAdHtml&#038;MarketPlace=US&#038;source=ac&#038;ref=qf_sp_asin_til&#038;ad_type=product_link&#038;tracking_id=legenrevea-20&#038;marketplace=amazon&#038;region=US&#038;placement=B0000TB01Y&#038;asins=B0000TB01Y&#038;linkId=ZEVLKXGFOKCHEECK&#038;show_border=true&#038;link_opens_in_new_window=true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The song was originally performed by Idina Menzel (who appeared later that season on the show as the biological mother of the show&#8217;s other main star, Lea Michele&#8217;s Rachel Berry) and it has some very high notes in it, so it&#8217;s mostly considered a song that would be sung by a woman. <\/p>\n<p>Of course, Kurt felt that this was unfair, and after challenging his Glee club teacher (with support from his father), he is given a chance to compete with the lead female singer of the group for the &#8220;right&#8221; to perform the song.<\/p>\n<p>It was an interesting plot, but a plot made even MORE interesting when you hear that it was based on an ACTUAL incident in Colfer&#8217;s life!!<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nWhen <a href=\"http:\/\/tvwatch.people.com\/2009\/11\/12\/glees-chris-colfer-reveals-real-life-story-behind-kurts-diva-moment\/\">speaking to People&#8217;s Blaine Zuckerman<\/a>, Colfer explained:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When I was in high school, every year we would have a talent show. Every year I would beg the teachers to let me sing \u201cDefying Gravity\u201d from Wicked. And every year they turned me down because I\u2019m a boy and it was \u2018a girl\u2019s song.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He told the story to Glee creator Ryan Murphy, who then based an episode around that story.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily for Colfer, just like how his father stood up for him in the episode, in real life his family also showed him support, as Zuckerman and Colfer further detailed&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When his grandmother, a reverend, heard that the school wouldn\u2019t let him choose his own song, she let him sing \u201cDefying Gravity\u201d in her church. \u201cI was fifteen,\u201d he explains. \u201cI think I could have juggled and they would have loved me.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Isn&#8217;t that just such a great story?<\/p>\n<p>The legend is&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><u><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">STATUS<\/span><\/u>: True<\/p>\n<p>Thanks so much to Zuckerman and Colfer for sharing it with us, and to Ryan Murphy, for translating that great story to the airwaves!<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to check out <a href=\"http:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/entertainment\/2009\/04\/19\/tv-legends-revealed-history\/\" target=\"_hplink\">my archive of TV Legends Revealed<\/a> for more urban legends about the world of television.<\/p>\n<p>Feel free (heck, I implore you!) to write in with your suggestions for future installments!
