{"id":344,"date":"2009-05-18T17:48:14","date_gmt":"2009-05-18T22:48:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/sports\/?p=344"},"modified":"2021-06-14T23:16:10","modified_gmt":"2021-06-15T04:16:10","slug":"premature-congratulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/sports\/2009\/05\/18\/premature-congratulation\/","title":{"rendered":"Did Shea Stadium Congratulate the Red Sox on Winning the World Series During Game 6 of the 1986 World Series?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><u><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">SPORTS LEGEND<\/span><\/u>: Shea Stadium congratulated the Boston Red Sox on winning the 1986 World Series before Game 6 of the 1986 World Series ended.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The moment will live on forever in infamy, Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner allowing Mookie Wilson&#8217;s slow grounder to first go through his legs to allow the Mets to complete their improbable comeback in the bottom of the 10th inning in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/sports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/bill_buckner3-1.jpg\" alt=\"bill_buckner3-1\" title=\"bill_buckner3-1\" width=\"515\" height=\"396\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/sports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/bill_buckner3-1.jpg 515w, https:\/\/legendsrevealed.com\/sports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/bill_buckner3-1-300x230.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Mets comeback began after the Red Sox had scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning and the first two Mets batters had made out.<\/p>\n<p>Then, with two strikes on the next batter, Gary Carter, the Mets came to life and scored three runs with two outs, the last two runs scoring on a wild pitch\/passed ball (Rich Gedman and Bob Stanley will certainly defend each possibility as the truth in that instance &#8211; Gedman believes that Stanley through the ball wide, Stanley believes that Gedman should have had the pitch in the dirt) and the aforementioned botched ground ball.<\/p>\n<p>But did the Mets really prematurely congratulate the Red Sox?<\/p>\n<p>As Peter Weiss said in Baseball Digest&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The champagne was waiting in the locker room, the team&#8217;s octogenerian owner [Tom Yawkey &#8211; BC] had already been presented with a plaque, and Bruce Hurt, the Red Sox&#8217; star lefty, had been named the Series MVP. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And, of course&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Congratulations to the World Champion Red Sox&#8221; flashed on the Shea Stadium scoreboard.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As it turned out, it was just a glitch &#8211; it was not intentional, it was just an error in the system as they prepared for it to be used after the last out. <\/p>\n<p>Still, it&#8217;s pretty hilarious!<\/p>\n<p>If anyone has a picture of it, I&#8217;d love to see it!<\/p>\n<p><u><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">STATUS<\/span><\/u>: True<\/p>\n<p>Feel free (heck, I implore you!) to write in with your suggestions for future installments!
